FEDTERM MANUAL - PLAYING FEDERATION 2 WITH FEDTERM

THE FEDTERM SCREEN

The FedTerm screen is split into different panels, which separate the information the game sends into different areas of the screen:

The main part of the screen shows the text sent by the game - the main output window. To enter commands, type in the input window at the bottom, and press the return key to send off the command. This part of the screen can also be switched to display other functions, by clicking on the notebook tabs at the bottom. The pages are:

  • Main - the main output window
  • Map - a larger map showing your explorations
  • Systems - a page display information about planets and star systems
  • Story - the unprocessed text sent by the game
  • Scrollback - this allows you to see text that has scrolled off the top of the screen

The top part of the screen has several panels which give different kinds of information. On the left is an alphabetical list of the players, objects and mobiles in the location with you. Double-click on one of the names in this panel and you will 'EXAMINE' the player, object or mobile.

In the centre is a panel that changes depending on what you are doing. It defaults to showing your description and character picture. If you examine a player or ask for a SpyNet Report the information and picture will be displayed. It also shows private conversations, and in a trading exchange it shows commodity prices. You can switch between those different displays by clicking on the tabs down the side of the panel.

On the right is a small section of map which shows where you are and what directions you can move in.

Under the map are movement arrows which generate the appropriate direction command, plus arrows for Up and Down. The B generates the 'BOARD' command which takes you in and out of your ship. The 'Command' button brings up a small box into which you can type a command, as an alternative to using the main input box.

Down the left hand side of the screen is a panel which shows your Fed2 character details with a picture, or your spaceship details. The display switches from one to the other depending on whether you are in your ship or not, or you can change it manually by clicking on the tabs at the bottom of the panel.

Down the right side of the screen is a list of the players in the game, which is kept updated as they log in and out.

A separate window can be opened to show private conversations.

Finally, a status bar at the bottom of the screen gives you useful information such as whether you are connected to the game, how many people are in the game, and so on.

Each of these functions is explained in detail later in this manual.
