REAL LIFE NEWS: MOONDUST COULD BE BAD FOR MOON COLONISTS

A new study shows that inhaling moon dust could do you a lot of damage. Using simulated moon dust and lab-grown human and mouse cells, scientists showed that the dust can kill the cell or damage its DNA.
It’s not that we weren’t aware of potential problems with moon dust. During the Apollo missions, the astronauts had problems including sneezing and watery eyes after the dust on their spacesuits made it back into their ships. Lunar dust sticks to everything because it’s dry and potentially holds an electrostatic charge.
Now we know that the problem goes deeper because moon dust can interact directly with the body’s cells.
The researchers used dust created by crushing moon rock, and grew the cells in a culture rather than using cells from a living creature, but the results suggest the problems facing humans visiting the moon in the future.
