REAL LIFE NEWS: PASSENGER IN SELF-DRIVING CAR GIVEN TICKET FOR BAD DRIVING

by Hazed

A self-driving car in San Francisco has achieved a dubious first – it got slapped with a traffic ticket by a motorcycle cop. But the company testing the car say it did nothing wrong.

The ticket was given to the autonomous vehicle because the police say it failed to yield to a pedestrian at a crosswalk. But Cruise Automation, the operator of the car, say that its onboard data shows the pedestrian was 10.8 feet away from the car when it started to drive down the road.

At least the robo-cars record all kinds of information about their journeys so it should make resolving these kinds of issues easy, assuming you can trust the recorded data.

Presumably it’s the person sitting in the car as a passenger who will get the ticket added to their record, which doesn’t really seem fair. It’s just one more thing the law is going to have to take into account should self-driving cars become commonplace.
