REAL LIFE NEWS: SEE, I TOLD YOU EATING HOT CHILLI PEPPERS WAS BAD FOR YOU!

by Hazed

A man ended up in hospital after eating the world’s hottest chilli pepper as part of a chilli-eating competition. After eating the pepper he started to experience “thunderclap” headaches – the first case to be associated with the consumption of chilli peppers.

Thunderclap headaches are caused by the sudden tightening of the vessels that supply blood to the brain. This is a condition known as reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCSV). The headaches are described as “crushingly painful”.

The 34-year-old man ate one Carolina Reaper chilli in the contest. Immediately afterwards he experienced dry heaves, then developed severe neck pain over the next few days, along with the thunderclap headaches which lasted a few seconds at a time.

His pain was so bad he went to the emergency room, where he was tested for various neurological conditions. The results were negative, but a CT scan showed signs of RCVS in several of the arteries in his brain.

Fortunately the man’s symptoms cleared up by themselves, and five weeks later a scan showed his arteries were back to normal.

The Carolina Reaper is the world’s hottest chilli, delivering an average of 1,569,300 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). By contrast, the heat of japapeno peppers measures between 2,500 to 8,000 SHU.

It makes my eyes water just writing about this!
