REAL LIFE NEWS: PUTTING THE BUBBLES INTO BEER WITHOUT BOILING
by Hazed
Last week I told you how scientists have come up with a way to brew beer without hops (see http://www.ibgames.net/fednews/2018/180408/official03.html). This week, in more beer innovation, the world’s largest brewer has come up with a more environmentally-friendly way to put the bubbles into beer.
Belgium-based AB InBev claim their new technique, which generates the gas bubbles needed for the malting of grains before fermentation without having to boil the water and hops, will reduce its CO2 emissions by 5%.
The method uses less heat and water, but does not detract from the taste of the finished product.
The traditional way of getting gas bubbles into the early stages of brewing is through the natural cooking process, which uses a lot of water and heat. The company says its new method involves heating the brew to below boiling point and then blowing nitrogen or CO2 into the tank to create bubbles.
The company hopes all its breweries will adopt the technique in the next ten years. It is also offering to share the technology with smaller brewers.
