REAL LIFE NEWS: CHINESE THIEVES STEAL ROAD SOLAR PANELS
by Hazed
Thieves have stolen parts of a road in China. The road is a solar highway, a one-kilometre stretch in the city of Jinan, which consists of solar panels under a layer of transparent concrete.
But less than a week after the solar road was opened, workers found a 1.8 metre section had been removed by thieves. They suspect that the aim of the theft was to duplicate the technology, since the materials used in the solar panels were not expensive. Even before the road was opened there had apparently been several attempts to steal components and technology.
This solar road can generate enough energy to power about 800 homes, but it costs about 3,000 yuan (£340) per square metre – that’s if it doesn’t get vandalised by thieves!
