DUMB TERRORIST OF THE MONTH: MAIL ORDER BOMB TO HIS OWN ADDRESS

by Hazed

There have been a lot of successful terrorist attacks in recent years, so it’s natural that we think that all terrorists are extremely clever, capable of carrying out cunning plans.

But there have also been a lot of stupid terrorists too, whose plans fail or who get caught because they make idiotic blunders. Shoe bombers and underpants bombers, for example, were not the brightest of the bunch.

Now we have one more example of a dumb terrorist to add to the list. A British teenager decided he wanted to set off a bomb. But he didn’t have the know-how to make his own explosive, so he decided to buy one online through the dark web.

But Gurtej Randhawa, a 19-year-old from the West Midlands, made a stupid mistake – he gave his home address as the delivery address. This meant that when police were tipped off about the purchase they were able to run a sting operation.

Officers from the UK National Crime Agency switched the package with a dud device and then delivered it to Randhawa’s address. The cops then waited until he tried to test the dummy device, and arrested him.

He pleaded guilty to attempting to import explosives, but denied maliciously possessing an explosive substance with intent to endanger life or cause serious injury. I guess technically he never did possess explosives because he only ever had the dummy, but nonetheless he was found guilty last week. He will be sentenced in January, and can expect a serious prison sentence.
