HACKER OF THE WEEK: MAKING A RADIO STATION PLAY A RUDE SONG

by Hazed

Hackers aren’t always criminals who break into computers for monetary gain. Sometimes they do it just for fun. Like the unknown hacker who keeps on hijacking outside broadcasts from a local radio station in order to play an adult-themed song.

Mansfield 103.2, a radio station in the north of England, has been targeted eight times in the past month, and each time their broadcasts are replaced by a comedy song by an artist called Ivor Biggun. The clean name for the song is The Winker’s Song (you can hear the song at the second link below, but be warned, it is definitely Not Safe For Work!).

The station has had no luck in their attempts to catch the culprit. Station manager Tony Delahunty explained: “The first time we reported it to the police, but they said they would have to catch him in the act. Our transmitter people can’t do anything because the person is using a mobile transmitter.”

The communications regulator Ofcom has also had no luck tracking down the offender. They are continuing to work with the radio station to catch the hacker.

If the miscreant does get caught, he could face two years in prison for the crime of “maliciously causing interference”. I imagine the trial will be very amusing.
