REAL LIFE NEWS: THE WORLD’S THINNEST HOLOGRAM

by Hazed

Scientists have developed a hologram that is a thousand times thinner than a human hair, making it the world’s thinnest.

Holograms are three-dimensional images created by laser lights interacting with each other. The images appear to have more depth than those formed from lenses. If holograms could be incorporated into technology such as TVs and phone screens, it would make the screen size irrelevant because the 3D image would “pop up” to display far more data that could fit on the actual, physical screen.

But, explained Ming Gu from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Australia, “conventional computer-generated holograms are too big for electronic devices.”

So the discovery by the team from RMIT alongside the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) that they can use a thin film of antimony telluride to reduce the size of holograms could be hugely significant.

Their tiny hologram measures just 60 nanometres. (There’s some technical stuff at the source link below that explains exactly how it works but I didn’t understand it enough to paraphrase it for this article!)

The next stage is to turn it into a rigid film that can be laid onto an LCD screen, so it can project a 3D holographic display. But to do that they will have to shrink the hologram down even further, to at least a tenth of its current size.
