REAL LIFE NEWS: DUBAI WILL BE PUTTING ROBOT POLICE ON PATROL
by Hazed
Robocop may be coming to the streets of Dubai, as the city unveils plans for 25% of its police force to be robots by 2030.
Fortunately, they aren’t building the big, scary Robocops like those in the movie – these robots are more friendly-looking, as you will see by looking at the pictures at the source link below.
People will be able to interact with the droid cop to report crimes, get local information and even pay fines by using a touchscreen built into its chest.
The police robot has been built by Pal Robotics and is a modified version of their Reem machine, which is designated a ‘humanoid service robot’ and is able to speak in Arabic and English. The 100kg robot moves on wheels and is about 5ft 6 high. It can be controlled remotely but it’s also completely autonomous, capable of navigating environments on its own – subject to its eight hour battery life.
These robocops are not intended to replace human police officers; the Dubai police envisage them as an extra tool to be used in public spaces and tourist hotspots. Their first assignment is going to be patrolling the enormous Dubai Mall.
Maybe we will see a human and a droid teaming up to solve crimes, in a case of real life imitating science fiction!
