REAL LIFE NEWS: SMART PHONES ARE KILLING GRAFFITI

by Hazed

Have you noticed a reduction in graffiti these days? I can’t say I’ve been aware of this, but scientists who’ve been studying such matters say there is less graffiti, and it’s all because of smart phones.

Researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University in England say that Instagram and YouTube are the new ways that young people use to share art, so instead of reproducing their work over a wide area, they are making one single painting and then sharing it online.

So as the prevalence of graffiti art becomes more widespread on social media, it’s declining in the real world.

Of course, this change favours the rich kids who can afford smart phones, so the profile of a typical graffiti artist is changing from those of low socio-economic status to wealthy and middle-class kids. Researcher Nicola Harding explains: “Graffiti has been a way for young men of low socio-economic status to take risks to achieve sub-cultural kudos. But now better-off artists are able to achieve this reputation more quickly by using their higher economic status to bypass the risk associated with urban graffiti writing.

“In this way the rich kids of Instagram have killed the graffiti writer.”
