DUMB HACKER OF THE WEEK: NOT VERY SECRET IDENTITY

by Hazed

Those clever hackers, they can raid a bank account and steal all its money without leaving any tracks, so they are impossible to catch. That’s how it works in the movies, anyway. But in real life, they are not always that bright.

Dwayne Cartouche Hans Jr, a 27-year-old from Richland, Washington, turned out to be a really dumb hacker. He’s been charged with computer and wire fraud, money laundering, and stealing money from a bank.

He worked out how to game a bank’s computer system and a government payment website, and extracted $134,000 from two accounts at JP Morgan. Then he used the money to buy shares in blue-chip companies and to invest in New York property.

Sounds ingenious… except that when he took the money from the bank, he moved it into five accounts that he had set up using his home internet account, and giving his full name, home address, date of birth and phone number.

He also used some of the money to pay the bill of somebody he was friends with on Facebook.

After successfully raiding the bank, he tried to divert $1.52 million from the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, but used his own email address to gain credentials on the site.

So once the authorities started to investigate who stole the money, it didn’t take them long to follow the trail back to Hans! The FBI surveilled him for a month and then arrested him last week.
