WHAT I DID ON MY HOLIDAYS
by Hazed
I’ve been off work for the past week on my annual holiday. I certainly picked the right week – the weather was lovely for most of the week, with London on Tuesday seeing the highest recorded September temperature for over 100 years. I chose that day to go to the beach where it was much cooler.

I walked for miles along the coast from Broadstairs to Ramsgate; my fitness tracker tells me I did 13,953 steps. For fit people that doesn’t sound like much, but for someone like me (middle-aged, fat, unfit) it was a monumental achievement. Particularly since half of that walk was paddling in the sea; walking on soggy sand certainly provides a strenuous workout.

The day before, Monday, I went on the cable car crossing London’s river Thames. This white elephant was built back when London hosted the Olympics, and it joined up two different places that hosted events, on either side of the river. Maybe it made sense then, but it sure doesn’t now – it links two places that people do want to go to, but not from one to the other: on the north side of the river, the Excel exhibition centre, and on the south side, the vast O2 arena.
The view from the cable car was great… except that it was a view of nothing very much, just boring new build offices and flats, and industrial sites. Dull.

It is run by Emirates airlines, and it does have one thing in common with airplanes: it made me feel sick. It wasn’t exactly teeming with people, either: I had a car to myself.
All in all, it’s a massive waste of money. But I am glad I went, if only so I could moan about it.
