WHERE DOES FEDTERM STORE MY STUFF?

by Hazed

A player mailed me last week with a problem. He wanted to set up different f-keys for his alts, so had decided the easiest way to do this was to have different versions of the FedTerm data which he could swap in and out as necessary. But he couldn’t find the file that new FedTerm used to store the f-keys.

The old version of FedTerm kept your logon details, f-keys and so on in a file called init.xml which you could easily find in the program’s main folder. But new FedTerm makes it slightly more difficult for you to find the data file, because it’s stored in the application data for your Windows user.

The exact location is going to depend on your Windows user name but here’s where it should be:

C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\ibgames
or possibly
C:\Users\[TOUR USERNAME]\AppData\Local\ibgames

The file is called fedterm.ini. The reason for different possibilities is that the program asks Windows where it should put its settings file, and this varies, depending on how the machine was originally set up. For example, on Alan's current machine it's in 'Roaming', but on his previous machine it was in Local...

One of the reasons for not keeping the settings in a separate place is so that if for some reason you give a copy of your FedTerm directory to someone else to try out (not recommended, but frequent in early Fed), you don't end up giving away your password, which is stored in settings!

Warning: we advise you not to manually mess with the fedterm.ini file which is generated by FedTerm and read by it. If you do alter it and mess it up FedTerm won't be able to find its settings. In that case there are two alternatives. One, if you were sensible enough to make a copy of the original .ini file, you can copy it back to restore the original settings. Or, two, if you didn't make a copy, you will have to delete the file and let FedTerm make a new one, after you re-enter all the info in FedTerm.

Moral: If you mess up, we will just say 'told you so', and if the news is thin on the ground that week we will hold you up as a dire warning to other players not to mess with the .ini file!

Remember that if you ask FedTerm to save your password, then it will be stored in this ini file – so never give it to anyone else!
