PICTURES OF THE WEEK: BICYCLES BUILT FROM MEMORY
by Hazed
What does a bicycle look like? Two wheels, a frame, pedals, handlebars, no problem. But if you were asked to draw a bicycle from memory, how accurate would you be?
That’s the question an Italian artist wanted answers to. Starting in 2009, he asked everyone he met – friends, colleagues, strangers – to sketch a men’s bicycle. He found that most people have a hard time actually visualising how a bike is put together.
After he had built up a collection of hundreds of drawings, some of which were accurate but most were not, he decided to take his project further – by building bicycles using the sketches as design plans.
The results are very strange indeed.
You can see a selection of the original sketches, and the bicycles that were built from them, here.
