SLACKER OF THE WEEK: SPANISH MAN SKIVES OFF FOR SIX YEARS WITHOUT ANYONE NOTICING
by Hazed
Normally if you want to skive off work you have to come up with an excuse for being absent – you are ill, you have to attend your grandmother’s funeral, or the trains are not running.
But a Spanish civil servant stopped showing up for work, and nobody noticed. For six whole years.
Joaquin Garcia, a 69 year old from Cadiz, was employed to supervise the building of a waste water treatment plant. He was paid €37,000 (£29,000; ($40,000) a year for this job. The water company thought he was supervised by the local authorities – and they thought he was under the control of the water company.
This misunderstanding allowed him to stay at home without anyone missing him, as he slipped through the cracks in the bureaucracy.
His extremely long-term absence was only noticed when he became eligible for a long service award. At that point, he was hit with a fine of €27,000 (£21,000; $30,000), although he has written to the city’s mayor to ask to be let off paying it.
You have to admire his audacity!
