REAL LIFE NEWS: CHESS CHEAT USES TECHNOLOGY TO WIN

by Hazed

An Italian chess player has been disqualified from a prestigious tournament after it was alleged he used a camera along with Morse code messages to cheat.

Arcangelo Ricciardi is ranked 51,366 in the world, so when he began beating far better players, officials at the tournament became suspicious. They noticed he was blinking in an unusual manner and holding his hand under his armpit.

When the referee of the match confronted Mr Ricciardi, he refused to open his shirt. They asked him to pass through a metal detector, and it turned out he had a camera fitted into a pendant slung around his neck, which was transmitting the game to someone who had a chess computer program. That accomplice was then sending him back the moves he should play, using Morse code. The camera was connected to a small box under his armpit which allowed him to detect the dots and dashes.

The referee, Jean Coqueraut, began to suspect there was something wrong early on in the competition. He said, “In chess, performances like that are impossible.” He said Mr Ricciardi did not get up at all during hours of playing and kept his thumb tucked in his armpit.

A nice mix of new tech and old techniques. Very ingenious.
