REAL LIFE NEWS: IG NOBEL PRIZES AWARDED

by Hazed

The fluid dynamics of urination – a study showing that nearly all animals take the same amount of time to pee – is one of the winners at this year’s Ig Nobel prize ceremony.

The spoof science awards are given annual for “improbable research”, to studies that first make you laugh and then make you think. This is the 25th year of the Ig Nobels and the winners were announced at a ceremony at Harvard University a few days ago.

The urination research won the physics prize. All four of the researchers involved in the study were at the ceremony to receive their prizes.

The literature prize went to the researchers who discovered that the word “huh?” or its equivalent exists in every human language.

The prize for management was given to a team that discovered that many business leaders develop a taste for risk-taking in childhood because they experienced natural disasters.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Police in Thailand won the economics prize for a scheme offering to pay policeman extra money if they refuse to take bribes.

The maths prize went to scientists who used mathematical techniques to figure out how a Moroccan emperor in the 17th century managed to father 888 children.

The recipients of this year’s awards travelled from six continents to receive their trophies and give their acceptance speeches. There are videos of the ceremony on the Ig Nobel site – click the second link below.
