REAL LIFE NEWS: SUPERMOON ECLIPSE ON ITS WAY

by Hazed

For once, I have found out about an astronomical event in plenty of time to alert you. The date for your diaries is September 27 – next Sunday – when you will be able to see a supermoon lunar eclipse. This phenomenon has only occurred five times since the year 1900.

The event combines two different things: a supermoon, and a lunar eclipse.

  • A supermoon is when the moon is closest to the Earth, so it appears to be larger in diameter – up to 14% bigger. This happens because the moon’s orbit is not a perfect circle but an ellipse, so the distance between the Earth and the moon changes.
  • A lunar eclipse is when the moon passes directly behind the Earth, giving it a red tint.

Combine the two, and you get an extra-large moon with a reddish hue.

The lunar eclipse next Sunday will be visible to most of North America and all of south America. It will start around 9.07pm and at 10.11pm you will be able to see the full supermoon total eclipse.

The good news is that unlike a solar eclipse, you will be able to look directly at the lunar eclipse without risk of damaging your eyes! The bad news is that here in the UK it will probably be raining so we won’t see a thing.
