ON THE WEB: JAPAN’S NEW EARTH ORBIT SATELLITE TAKES AMAZING PICTURES OF OUR PLANET

22,000 miles above the Earth, a new satellite is watching us. Japan’s Himawari-8 weather satellite takes a picture of the planet ever ten minutes, and this website shows some of the images from its first day in orbit last week.
There’s an animation which show typhoons roiling across the sky, but most incredible is a very detailed high res image – the satellite can see features down to about a third of a mile in size, which is twice the resolution of other weather satellites.
