DUMB CRIMINAL OF THE WEEK: SHOWING THE BOSS WHAT YOU STOLE

by Hazed

An interesting article on InfoWorld lists some of the red flags to watch out for when taking on an employee – things that should warn you that they may cause trouble for you.

In the course of giving examples for all his possible problems, the author described one rogue employee who definitely falls into the class of “dumb criminal”. The problems started when the job candidate failed to disclose a criminal record at interview. When the background check showed his history, the boss decided to keep him on anyway, which turned out to be a big mistake – because he ended up stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of computer equipment from the company.

The “dumb criminal” part of the story comes from the way he was caught. He asked his boss to pop round to his home to help diagnose possible malware on his home computer. On entering, the boss saw loads of equipment identical to the machines at work. He explains, “When he realized I recognized the equipment, his expression was clear. It had been a mistake to invite me to his house, at least without first hiding the stolen equipment.

“He tried to convince me it was depreciated equipment that accounting had already written off and he had verbal permission from the previous boss to take the equipment home for “training” purposes. A quick phone call and a check of the visible company serial numbers confirmed this was active equipment.”

Very dumb of him to leave the evidence out in plain sight!
