REAL LIFE NEWS: COMET WATCHING

by Hazed

Staying with celestial bodies, there’s a comet making a flypast of Earth this week. Comet Lovejoy (cute name!) was due to be closest to the planet on Wednesday January 7, but even though you’ve missed the best chance to see it, you may still be able spot it in the night sky without the aid of a telescope for the rest of the month.

Your best bet to see anything other than a smudge is going to be to leave the city or town and head out into the country where there’s no light pollution or smoggy pollution. You will also benefit from a pair of binoculars to magnify the view. Even without them Lovejoy should be dimly visible to the naked eye if you know where to look. The source link below gives you some good instructions on where in the sky it will be.

Lovejoy will pass through the constellations of Orion, Taurus and the Pleiades as January commences. Happy skywatching!
