ROSETTA NEWS: IN SPACE, NO ONE CAN SMELL YOUR STINK

The Rosetta probe which is investigating comet 67P/C-G up close is armed with a variety of instruments to examine different aspects of the comet, and one of those tells us what the comet smells like.
Apparently, the smell is that of rotten eggs, ammonia and formaldehyde. Lovely!
This conclusion comes from two months of data from the Rosetta Orbiter Sensor for Ion and Neutral Analysis (ROSINA) which has been examining the comet’s tail as the probe moved in close to its current orbital position. The sensor’s chemical analysis shows that if it were possible for humans to smell things in space, what they would smell would be pretty unpleasant.
