REAL LIFE NEWS: BIRTH SEASON AFFECTS MOOD OF ADULTS

by Hazed

Horoscopes are bunk. Sorry if you believe otherwise, but there is no way that the position of the stars in the sky can have any influence on your personality. You might just as well claim that the position of the chairs in the room you are born in is significant. There, I’ve just invented a whole new branch of superstition: chairology.

So dividing the population up into 12 personality types based on when they were born doesn’t work. However, scientists have found that babies born in the summer are a lot more likely to suffer mood swings when they are adults than babies born in the winter.

By studying 400 people and matching their personality type to which part of the year they were born in, the scientists from Budapest found that people born at certain times of the year have a much higher chance of developing certain types of temperament. They say this is because the seasons influence levels of some monoamine neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin, which control the mood.

They discovered that spring and summer babies were more likely to have a tendency to be excessively positive, those born in the autumn were less likely be depressive, and those born in winter less likely to be irritable.

More research is needed to find out just why the seasons affect the production of neurotransmitters.
