REAL LIFE NEWS: SEE, I TOLD YOU WINE WAS GOOD FOR YOU!

by Hazed

Now this is the kind of science news I like to see. A leading scientist in the field of alcohol consumption has claimed that drinking a bottle of wine a day does no harm to your health.

Well, that will upset the anti-booze health nuts! The current guidelines say you should have no more than a glass of wine – a medium sized one for women, a large one for men.

Dr Kari Poikolainen is a former World Health Organisation alcohol expert. He has analysed research which has been conducted over decades into how alcohol affects the human body, and come to the conclusion that drink is only harmful when you consume more than 13 units a day – that’s four to five pints of beer or more than a bottle of wine.

He also says that it is healthier to drink that it is to abstain. Several studies recently have shown that moderate drinking is better than being a teetotaller, but Dr Poilalainen says that what counts as “moderate” can be higher than the generally accepted guidelines.

Well, hooray! Pass the corkscrew and let’s pour some more wine.

However, before you take this as licence to get drunk every night, bear in mind that this report has not been published in a peer reviewed journal, just in the Daily Mail in the UK, a newspaper not renowned for its accuracy when it comes to scientific or health matters. We will have to wait and see if any more reliable publications confirm these findings. (No, sadly, the Fed2 Star doesn’t count.)
