REAL LIFE NEWS: SEE, I TOLD YOU COMPUTERS WERE BAD FOR YOU!

When I was a child I was told that sitting too close to the TV was bad for my eyes. Now I am a grown-up, I have been sitting close to a computer screen for over thirty years, and so far my eyeballs haven’t exploded.
But wait! A report says that I am risking danger to my eyeballs with Computer Vision Syndrome! Oh no!
Apparently, “part of the LED light emitted by electronic device screens can damage retinal cells."
Sounds terrible. I’d better switch off the computer and stop writing the news immediately.
Except that the experiments that resulted in this conclusion were carried out on rats, which were subjected to the kind of conditions a human computer user would never experience. As a consultant ophthalmologist at the London Eye Hospital commented, "The Madrid study tested someone looking at the equivalent of a 100watt light bulb, at a distance of 12 inches for 12 hours a day... And this isn’t something a normal person would be doing."
The report was published by a company called Reticare, which produces a shield which will “protect” you from this terrible damage. Well, I guess that’s one way to drum up business!
