COUNTERFEIT GOODS OF THE WEEK: RAT CASHMERE
by Hazed
Counterfeiting is all the rage, particularly in this age of austerity, but some fake goods are stranger than you could imagine.
Take the collection of fake cashmere clothes that Italian police seized last week. It did not contain cashmere, which is a fibre obtained from the undercoat of specific breeds of goat. Instead, the clothes were made up of a mixture of acrylic, viscose and fur from other animals – including rats.
Yes, rats!
The clothes originated in China where counterfeiting is widespread. In Italy, 14 people were arrested because of the fakes and police seized over one million garments.
I pity anyone who bought one of these items: they are likely to find themselves being followed by predatory cats!
