PICTURES OF THE WEEK: MERCURY IN GLORIOUS TECHNICOLOUR

The Messenger probe has been in orbit around Mercury since March 2011, after two previous flybys. It’s been sending back some detailed pictures which scientists are studying, and which they have stitched together to form a colour map of the planet.
If there were humans orbiting the planet, we’d see it as a dull, brownish-grey world. But for this map, the colours have been exaggerated to highlight variations in the rock that makes up the planet.
