REAL LIFE NEWS: BANK CROWDS COLLAPSE THE FLOOR
by Hazed
When tribal members of the Lower Brule Indian Reservation and the neighboring Crow Creek Tribe in Fort Thompson received checks as part of a government settlement, they rushed to the bank to cash them. Over 7,000 people were issued checks with a total of more than $6 million given out before Christmas, providing a lovely holiday bonus to the tribes people.
Naturally, the recipients were keen to cash those checks, so they hurried to the bank. Many of them headed to the same branch: the Lower Brule bank. Unfortunately the bank couldn’t take the strain of all those people - and the floor collapsed! It dropped two feet and trapped people inside the building. Thankfully, nobody was hurt.
I’ve heard of a run on a bank bringing the institution to its knees, but this is the first time that a large number of people wanting to withdraw money have literally brought down the building!
