REAL LIFE NEWS: SCOTTISH VILLAGE TWINS WITH MARS

by Hazed

The Curiosity rover is continuing on its trek to the feature which NASA engineers have named Glenelg. When it gets there, it’ll examine the rock formation to learn more about the makeup of the planet.

Glenelg was given its name in keeping with the naming protocol for all the features in the area. They were given names associated with Yellowknife in northern Canada, where Glenelg is a geological feature.

What’s more, the word Glenelg is a palindrome (it reads the same forwards and backwards) and this seemed appropriate because Curiosity will visit it twice, once coming and once going.

Glenelg is also the name of a small village in Scotland, and the residents were keen to assert their link to the Mars mission. They have held a ceremony to twin the village to its namesake on the red planet.

Well, any excuse for a party!
