The Ig Nobel awards celebrate the wackier side of science. They are awarded annually to achievements that “first make people laugh, and then make them think”. As the website says, “The prizes are intended to celebrate the unusual, honor the imaginative - and spur people’s interest in science, medicine, and technology.”
In a ceremony at Harvard University on Thursday evening, this year’s winners were announced, with their prizes handed over by real Nobel-winners.
The prize-winning research included the physics of pony-tails, why coffee spills when you walk, and how chimpanzees can identify each other from behind.
Plus, the literature prize went to the US Government General Accountability Office, for “issuing a report about reports about reports that recommends the preparation of a report about the report about reports about reports.”
And my favorite, the peace prize was awarded to a Russian company that converted bullets into diamonds.
