FEDPARDY!

Tuesday, September 4, 2012
by Fancy-Fancy, Gengineer of Toontown

Yes, it’s true! I actually got three players this week to show up to play FEDPARDY! Gizmo, Sephorin, and Racingnut joined me in Studio 1 for this extraordinary event. As this was the first time in over a year that Fedpardy got off the ground, I went ahead with the rules of the game, followed by tonight’s categories. Those categories were: The Tour, You... Belong in the Zoo, Things a Trader would Know, and Music in Fed. Racingnut ended up spinning the high number on the wheel in the studio and got to select first.

Racingnut started with The Tour, and went right on down the line in the category. Racingnut got the 1-pointer, everyone passed on the 2-pointer, and then Racingnut found the first Daily Double under the 3-pointer. Exercising his right to wager up to the highest value on the board, he risked 5 points on the category, and this was the answer:

This popular restaurant serves authentic hunan and szechuan cooking, and is popular with locals and visitors alike - many traders try to time their runs so they have a spare hour or two around lunchtime to eat here. And it uses the direct heat of the nearby sun to do all the cooking.

Racingnut came up with the correct response of “What is The Sizzling Wok?” for 5 points. However, after everyone passed on the 4-pointer, he subsequently responded wrong in the 5-point answer in the category to lose 5 points. With that category done, Racingnut started the You... Belong in the Zoo category. After passing on the 1 and 2-point answers, Racingnut and Gizmo both missed on the 3-pointer, trying varying versions of grizzle in their responses, when the actual animal whose head is mounted on a wall in several places is a moose (or stag). Racingnut then got the 4-pointer, where a grizzle was the correct response, and nobody tried the 5-pointer. At the half-way point, Racingnut led with 2, to -3 for Gizmo.

As the one trailing at the half, Gizmo got to select first in Double Fedpardy, with all remaining answers having their point values doubled. Things a Trader would Know proved to be a pretty good category to the players, with Gizmo scoring the 2, Racingnut the 4 after Sephorin missed it, Gizmo collecting the 6, and then 10 more on a Daily Double, giving, “What is liquidate?” to “The command used to exit one of your futures positions in Fed.”

Gizmo left the 10-pointer for later and moved on to Music in Fed. Everyone passed on an answer referring to grafitti that reads, “JIM MORRISON LIVES!”, before Racingnut collected the 4-pointer about “Don’t Fear the Reaper”. The 6-pointer about the Urban Spaceman got passed, then Gizmo scooped up the 8-pointer about an Elvis song with a Fed twist to the lyrics that fooled Racingnut, who tried the original. Then nobody tried to respond to the 10-pointer in the Music category. Oh well, it’ll be Bach some day. That left the 10-pointer in Trader, and everyone gave a wrong response to the maximum loss you can take on a Fed futures contract before it gets automatically liquidated. And so concluded Double Fedpardy.

The scores at the end of Double Fedpardy had Gizmo in first with 13, Racingnut with -8, and Sephorin wih -14. So Gizmo alone advanced to Final Fedpardy, and the category of Planetary Infrastructure to wager on. With his wager decided, and confirmation he was ready, I then presented tonight’s Final Fedpardy answer:

Besides the Leisure Mega-Centers, this build directly affects the consumption of a commodity.

At the end of 60 seconds, we took a look at how Gizmo responded - “what is solar power?” But, the correct response was “What is defence?”, so he got it wrong. Gizmo wagered 12 points, leaving him with 1, but that was still enough to make Gizmo this week’s Fedpardy champion!

I’m still here to host the Fed Phrase Game and Fedpardy on alternating Tuesday nights at 10.00pm Eastern. You can come join me September 11 for the Fed Phrase Game, and September 18 for FEDPARDY!
