REAL LIFE NEWS: THE COST OF BEING BATMAN

by Hazed

The new Batman film The Dark Knight Rises has just opened, the third and final part of the trilogy. Last week, I attended a double bill of parts 1 and 2: Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, to get me in the mood for the new movie, which I will go and see in a few days. I can’t wait!

Obviously, these are movies based on comic books, and not meant to be taken seriously. They are definitely not rooted in the real world. But suppose it really was possible to put on a cape and fight crime like Batman... how much would all that gear cost you?

The answer is about $2.8 million. That includes the memory cloth uses for the flying cape, the Kevlar for the suit, the graphite helmets, the utility belt, and of course the batmobile. This has been figured out here.

They also figure out how come Bruce Wayne can afford all this, by calculating his networth.

Sadly, even if you have a spare couple of millions lying around, it’s unlikely you’d be able to emulate all of Batman’s tricks. Students from the University of Leicester have worked out that his cape just won’t work: http://blastr.com/2012/07/scientists-explain-why-ba.php. Shame.

Stop press: I wrote this story earlier in the week, before the appalling events in Denver on Friday. A very tragic example of real life coming to the movies.
