CYBORG OF THE WEEK: THE DUCK WITH A METAL BEAK

A duck in New Zealand has been fitted with a steel reinforcement to its beak, making it possibly the world’s first duck cyborg.
The duck was found with the bottom of its beak torn off and broken, so its tongue hung through a hole under its chin. Staff at the Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust in Ohariu Valley tried to reattach the beak using surgery, but when this failed they had to come up with another solution. Trust spokesman Craig Shepherd said, “We’ve wrapped some fine, stainless steel mesh around it and wired it all up. It looks a bit like a set of braces you might see on a human. Except it’s on the bottom beak, and it’s been really successful.”
The duck, which is recovering well from its ordeal, has been called Beaky.
