WE MOVED TO THE CLOUD

by Hazed

It was all a bit last-minute but Fed2 successfully moved to the cloud last weekend. The data files as at the reset on Saturday were transferred to the new server which was put into operation on Sunday morning, and then the DNS address records were changed to point to the new server, so that after Sunday’s reset, most players automatically found themselves in the new place.

It’s still shiny and new, with that new spaceship smell...

This all meant that whatever happened in the old version of Fed2 on Saturday after the reset didn’t count, so players could take advantage of the “no save” period to try out all the dangerous things they had never dared before, like flying into the sun, seeing what’s behind those doors on Titan, or trying to take liberties with Diesel.

The move was fairly seamless, with only one problem showing up on the new version: the thingy that automatically resets the game wasn’t working, so Alan had to do the reset manually every morning before he goes to work. It’s still not working so from today Alan will do a manual reset each evening at the usual time of 7.00pm server time (or thereabouts) although for practical reasons they may be no reset tomorrow (Monday). (Incidentally, the server’s clock is now correct! It’s set to UK time.)

Speaking of the reset, you may have noticed that when the game does reset it takes a bit longer than it used to - minutes, rather than seconds. That’s because we have less processing power available with the new setup, so backing up all the files takes longer.

But these minor details aside, everything went very smoothly. So as soon as a few scuff marks start to appear on the walls, it’ll be just like the old place!
