REAL LIFE NEWS: THREE YEARS OF PROCRASTINATION

by Hazed

Every day, you waste over an hour procrastinating, according to a new survey. That adds up to three years over the course of your life as an adult.

In fact, it could be worse than this... one in five people waste more than two hours a day not doing what they should be doing.

And sadly, it seems women are more likely to procrastinate than men: 59% admit to delaying important tasks, compared to only 50% of men. The young are more likely to procrastinate than the old.

As you would imagine, it’s the unpleasant tasks that get put off, not the pleasant ones.

This all comes from a survey by search engine Bing.

But wait a moment... I take issue with the conclusion. Sure, everybody is prone to procrastination, to putting off things we don’t want to do, but I would question whether the time is wasted. Surely in that hour we’re getting on with something else that needs doing: it may not be quite as vital as the delayed task, but it’s still important and necessary. Not everyone procrastinates by playing Angry Birds or staring into space gormlessly.

Imagine you have a list of stuff to do, and you have ranked the tasks in order of importance. If task number 1 is something you don’t want to do, and you put it off, you’ll justify the delay by going down the list and polishing off the rest of the tasks.

So the time isn’t wasted at all!
