DISGUSTING AND WASTEFUL FASHION IDEA OF THE WEEK

by Hazed

Researchers at the University of Western Australia have discovered a way to make clothes out of red wine.

Let’s pause for a moment and ponder what a waste of good wine that is. After all, there’s no shortage of normal fabrics with which to fashion your apparel - why use alcohol which you could be drinking?

OK, the wine that Gary Cass used was not actually fit to drink - it was contaminated with Acetobacter bacteria, which caused a skin-like rubbery layer to form on top of the vat. Now, my first thought on seeing that would be, damn, I’ll have to throw this wine away, but Gary is more adventurous than I am.

He worked with an artist, Donna Frankline, to transform bacteria-infused alcohol into a cellulose fabric by pouring and wrapping it against a mold, or against a human body. What they ended up with was a seamless material that clung to the body. Apparently, while it’s forming the fabric feels like sludge, but once it’s dry it acts like a second skin.

Not content with using red wine they’ve also come up with clothing made from white wine and Guinness. They all retain their natural color - and odor. So fine, if you want to smell like a brewery or a wino, it sounds ideal!

Words fail me.
