DUMB CRIMINAL OF THE WEEK

by Hazed

Villains, here’s a tip: if you are on trial for a crime, and have pleaded not guilty, then don’t admit your guilt on Facebook!

Michael Ruse really should have heeded this advice. He was in Portsmouth Crown Court, UK, accused of attacking a friend’s father with a baseball bat. At the end of the trial, just before the jury was sent out to deliberate on its verdict, he posted a status update on the social media site: “I think I get away with it tbh x.” When a friend replied, Ruse added that things were “looking good”.

But he spoke too soon. Somebody printed out the exchange and delivered it anonymously to the prosecution lawyers. When confronted with this evidence, Ruse had to admit the assault and changed his plea to guilty.

But that wasn’t the end of his Facebook folly: while he was waiting to be sentenced he posted a comment that Judge Ian Person was “stuck up”.

The judge imposed a 46-week jail term, suspended, and said, “You pleaded guilty only really because you were stupid enough to put on Facebook what amounted to a full confession.”

Afterwards, Ruse returned to Facebook and posted, “Best start sorting myself out.” Yeah, mate, you really should!
