REAL LIFE NEWS: BEER GOGGLES WORK BOTH WAYS

by Hazed

Beer goggles is the name given to the phenomenon that when we are drunk we think other people look more attractive than we would if we were sober.

But it turns out that it works the other way, too. No, I don’t mean other people think we are sexy when we are drunk. But drunk people think that they are hotter than they really are.

A study at the University of Grenoble, France — given the wonderful name “Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder” — carried out a series of tests to check whether alcohol has any effect on attractiveness.

Nineteen drinkers in a local bar were asked to rate themselves for attractiveness, intelligence and sense of humour. At the same time, their alcohol level was measured. It turned out that the more they drank, the sexier they thought they were.

The researchers then followed this up by looking at whether just thinking you had been drinking would have the same effect. In this test, 94 men were told they were testing an alcoholic drink for an imaginary company, but only half of them were given alcohol — the rest were served a non-alcoholic beverage.

When asked how sexy they were, the ones who thought they had been drinking alcohol — whether they had or not — scored themselves higher than the ones didn’t think they had been given alcohol.

Fascinating!
