REAL LIFE NEWS: GAMES ON PRESCRIPTION

by Hazed

If a company called Brain Plasticity gets its way, then people with schrizophrenia could be prescribed something other than drugs to help their condition: they could be given a prescription to play a computer game.

The company has developed a cognitive training game which it thinks will help people with schizophrenia to improve deficits in their attention and memory. They will soon conduct a study involving 150 people who will play the game for one hour, five times a week over six months. If the participants' quality of life improves after the trial, Brain Plasticity will seek to gain approval from the US Food and Drug Administration to market the game as a therapeutic drug.

What a fascinating idea! Read more about the implications here.
