REAL LIFE NEWS: ZOMBIES ATTACK OHIO

by Hazed

A county in central Ohio suffered a devastating zombie attack on Halloween. Fortunately, the emergency services were on hand to deal with the invasion.

No, don't panic, they weren't real zomies - they were volunteers who took part in an exercise to train emergency responders. The idea was to run a drill for those who would deal with real-life situations involving hazardous materials and disaster response, but to make things interesting, they put out a call for people to show up dressed as zombies.

The exercise involved the emergency services using standard decontamination procedures to treat the zombies and turn them human again, thus averting a zombie apocalypse.

The exercise was inspired by an online post from the CDC back in May which spiced up its usual emergency preparedness advice by using the example of zombies, which seem to be very popular right now. The steps you should take in the event of a zombie attack - make an emergency kit with food and water, have a plan, etc - apply to all kinds of genuine disasters.

Dozens of agencies have embraced the idea and come up with ways to use the zombie metaphor in their own planning. As a result, otherwise boring messages are getting far more attention from the public than they usually do.

That's why the zombies were out in force in Delaware County, Ohio last Monday, with prizes on offer to volunteers with the most outstanding costume and makeup, and the best zombie walk.
