INTERSTELLAR LINK NETWORK FAIL

by Hazed

Fed DataSpace was rocked yesterday by the failure of the interstellar link network, which stranded its citizens in the star systems where they happened to be at reset.

Only the very wealthy, who can afford to rent a teleporter from the extortionate Emily's Emporium of Mechanical Delights & Electronic Wizardry on The Lattice, were able to travel as normal.

Interstellar Transit Corporation (Hyperspace), or ITCH, the outfit that runs the interstellar link network on behalf of the Galactic Administration, at first denied there was a problem at all. They then issued a statement which said only a few of the interstellar links were affected. A spokesdroid stated that, "The outage has meant that a limited number of our links are unavailable at this time in the CRASS region."

Newsdroids were then heard to mutter, "What in the name of Ming is the CRASS region," leaving the spokesdroid to hastily expand on the acronym, which apparently stands for Chrysoberyl, Russia, Acme, Spindle and Sol.

But it soon became clear that links throughout the entire Galaxy had failed, and nobody was able to jump through hyperspace to travel to other star systems. ITCH were forced to issue a further statement, in which they claimed that there had been a problem, but it was fixed and everything would be OK now.

Naturally, this turned out to be as optimistic as their initial communication, and it was only after the entire universe was rebooted that the interstellar links were brought back into action, allowing Fedizens to resume their usual travel.

An ITCH engineer later explained that the failure was the result of a software upgrade which had been intended to prevent the recursive crashes in the link network which sometimes happened when one link failed. Unfortunately, the upgrade had caused all the links to fail at the same time.

The Real Story

Actually, it was a bug which Alan accidentally introduced when he put in the code to fix the customs bug mentioned in the previous story. He was alerted to the problem an hour after the reset, and immediately fixed the code and deployed the fix with an extra reset.
