REAL LIFE NEWS: MUSIC MAKES YOU DEPRESSED

by Hazed

So if the food and the work don't finish you off, listening to a lot of music could make you depressed. It turns out that teenagers who listen to music all the time are more likely to suffer from depression. By contrast, teens who read a lot tend to be in good shape mentally.

Other forms of media, such as movies and TV, don't seem to affect the mental health one way or the other. Dr Brian Primark, medicine professor at Pittsburgh University, said that a recent study showed a strong link between music listening and major depression.

"At this point it is not clear whether depressed people begin to listen to more music to escape, or whether listening to large amounts of music can lead to depression, or both. Either way, these findings may help clinicians and parents recognize links between media and depression,” he explained.

I wonder if the study distinguished between the type of music the depressive kids were listening to... the output of some bands always made me feel miserable! Leonard Cohen, for example...
