GEEK SCIENCE OF THE WEEK: THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE AS A THERMOMETER

by Hazed

If you think about it, you probably wouldn't be surprised to learn that the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco is affected by the temperature. It's very large, and it's made of metal, so therefore the structure must expand as it heats up during the day, and contract when it cools down at night.

The curators at San Francisco's Exploratorium wanted to know exactly how it expands and contracts, and by how much. So they set up an experiment to find out. You can read about it here.

Thanks to Occy for sending me this fascinating story.
