REAL LIFE NEWS: UNICORN MEAT SALE ATTRACTS LAWYERS' THREATS

by Hazed

Lawyers are not known for their sense of humor, and they often take action against things that were jokes, spoofs or parodies. Here's an absolutely classic example of humorless overkill.

The Think Geek website advertized a special product on sale for April Fool's Day: unicorn meat. They used the slogan, "Pate is passe. Unicorn - the new white meat." The spoof went on to explain how the meat, which is "full of sparkles", is farmed by Irish nuns...

It's very funny, and clearly a joke. But that didn't stop a firm of lawyers representing the National Pork Board from sending a cease-and-desist order, on the grounds that calling unicorn meat "the new white meat" is an infringement of the trademarked slogan "the other white meat". What's more, this legal document is 12 pages long!

Think Geek's official response reads as follows. "It was never our intention to cause a national crisis and misguide American citizens regarding the differences between the pig and the unicorn," said Scott Kauffman, President and CEO of Geeknet. "In fact, ThinkGeek's canned unicorn meat is sparkly, a bit red, and not approved by any government entity."
