MY ISP CHANGE IS COMPLETE (WITH SOME HASSLE)

by Hazed

As predicted, my ISP change went ahead on Tuesday. I was pessimistic about it, expecting there to be problems, and I was right.

The main set-up went without a hitch - a short time spent crawling on the floor under the desk to unplug the old router from the power socket and phone socket, and plug the new one in, and the new system was powering up. A little bit of tinkering got my computer connected to the router using the wireless link. At which point, I had access to the net and could surf the web, log into Fed, download my email...

But wait - there was one small problem. I couldn't send email.

24 hours later, my efforts to fix this problem resulted in me breaking outgoing mail as well. Disaster!

I had run into two separate bugs with the email client I use (Thunderbird) and although searching the net found lots of other people with the same problems, none of the suggested solutions worked. So I had to junk the program and go back to using Microsoft's Outlook Express instead... at which point, my mail worked again.

Of course, it took me several hours to recreate my address book and set up all my filtering rules again, then another hour to catch up on the mail backlog that had built up while I had the problems, but finally by the time I knocked off on Thursday evening, everything was back to normal.

Oh well, it could have been worse...
