GEEK TOY: FLYING MOTORCYCLE COMING SOON

by Hazed

It's now 2010 and I still don't have a flying car. But a flying motorcycle might just be available next year.

A Californian company is hoping to sell a $60,000 do-it-yourself kit as early as 2011. The engine and avionics are sold separately (for about $25,000) so it's not going to be cheap, or very practical, but it sounds pretty cool. It's called the Switchblade.

The pilot and one passenger sit side by side in leather seats and climate-controlled luxury. The instrument display switches from air to ground readings, and the wings open out like scissors and then swing back into clamshell compartments.

The vehicle is a three-wheeler which technically means it is classified as a motorcycle not a car, and therefore isn't as highly regulated. An FAA-approved prototype is expected by the end of this year.
