REAL LIFE NEWS: GIANT JELLYFISH SINK TRAWLER

by Hazed

A 10-ton fishing boat came to grief earlier this month, sunk off Eastern Japan. The cause? Giant jellyfish!

The trawler, called the Diasan Shinsho-maru, capsized as the crew was attempting to haul in a net which contained dozens of the huge jellyfish.

Nomura's jellyfish can each weigh up to 450 lbs and the waters around Japan have been infested with the beasts this year, possibly because of particularly favorable weather and water conditions (although scientists aren't really sure). They are one of the largest jellyfish in the world and can grow up to six and a half feet in diameter. Last time Japan was invaded by the sea creatures, back in summer 2005, the jellyfish damaged nets, rendered fish inedible because of their toxic stings, and even caused injuries to fishermen.

The three crew members were thrown into the sea when their ship capsized off Chiba, but fortunately they were rescued by another trawler.

You can look at a selection of pictures of Nomura's jellyfish here. Wow, you can see how they could sink a ship!
