REAL LIFE NEWS: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TIMEZONESby Hazed125 years ago, on 13 October 1884, the International Meridian Conference was held in Washington DC. Delegates from 25 nations attended, and amongst the resolutions passed was the adoption of the timezones that we use today, with the zero meridian line passing through Greenwich Observatory in London (just down the road from where I live). If you want to know more, there's a huge great report on the conference here. For a much briefer summary, go here. Thanks to Gwaptiva for alerting me to this anniversary. |
