REAL LIFE NEWS: EXPLOSIVE WORKERS

by Hazed

The financial crisis means many companies are laying workers off, but some of them are not going quietly. In France, workers at a bankrupt car parts factory are threatening to blow up the factory!

The 366 ex-employees of new Fabris in Chatellerault have seized the premises. They are demanding redundancy pay, and unless they get it, they say they will detonate stockpiled gas bottles. They've given car companies Renault and PSA Peugot Citroen until 31 July to cough up the cash, or they'll blow the place sky high.

They're not the only ones threatening pyrotechnics. A bunch of copycat workers from Nortel have done the same. They've threatened mayhem at their company's Yvelines factory unless the telecoms outfit hands over more redundancy cash. 480 employees face the axe because of the company's bankruptcy proceedings, and now workers have stacked gas cylinders around the front of the plant and are threatening to blow them up if their demands are not met.

All this follows on from an incident earlier this year in which French workers kidnapped the local Sony chief executive who visited the company's video tape plant to bid farewell to 300 dismissed staff. What next - will the workers threaten to nuke the French parliament?
